Sacroiliac (SI) joint injections can be either therapeutic or diagnostic injections of the sacroiliac joint, typically using a solution of local anesthetic and corticosteroid.
Level, laterality, and number of injections
There is only one level of injection for SI joint injections and the following code should be used for these requests regardless of laterality:
Code | Description |
27096 | Injection procedure for sacroiliac joint, anesthetic/steroid, with image guidance (fluoroscopy or CT) including arthrography when performed |
You will indicate laterality with the number of units (or service dates) requested, with only one injection being performed for each unit requested:
1 unit = unilateral injection (x1 injection for one side, either left of right)
2 units = bilateral injections (x1 injection on both sides)
In the example in the screenshot above, this request would be for a unilateral injection.
Clinical documentation
The laterality, along with all other details of the injection, should be clearly indicated in the attached clinical documentation. Please see this article for more details.
